Sulfamethoxazole

Usually given in combination with trimethoprim (aka Bactrim® or Septra®).

Dosing

CrCl Formula

CrCl > 80: 500 mg - 1 g po q 6 - 8 h.

Important side effects

Allergic reactions, blood dyscrasias, crystalluria, renal failure (AIDS patients), diarrhea, nausea, severe hypersensitivity.

Important drug interactions

Acetohexamide, chlorpropamide, cyclosporine, fosphenytoin, glipizide, para-aminobenzoic acid (paba) and paba derivatives, phenytoin, tolazamide, tolbutamide.
