Mupirocin (Bactroban®).

Use topically for S. aureus carriage states, in the anterior nose. It decreases Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in dialysis patients when used weekly, but efficacy for preventing surgical wound infection is variable.

Widespread use will lead to rapid emergence of resistance; 28% in New Zealand, where it is over the counter. Resistance may be associated with failure of decolonization.
