Pyoderma

Diagnosis

Skin infection aka impetigo; a cellulitis that goes from vesicular to crusted.

Epidemiologic Risks

Person to person; mostly a disease of children.

Microbiology

Group A streptococcus with or without (mostly) S. aureus.

Empiric Therapy

Oral penicillin if streptococcal; cephalexin or dicloxacillin if mixed staph/strep. In this increasing era of MRSA, po doxycycline may be more reliable. Local mileage will vary.

Topical mupirocin also is effective.
