Chancroid

Diagnosis

Painful, ulcerated, genital ulcers with suppurative inguinal adenopathy.

Epidemiologic Risks

Sex.

Has become quite unusal in the West.

Microbiology

Haemophilus ducreyi.

Empiric Therapy

azithromycin 1 g orally in a single dose OR

ceftriaxone 250 mg (IM) in a single dose OR

ciprofloxacin 500 mg orally twice a day for 3 days, OR

erthythromycin base 500 mg orally three times a day for 7 days.

Pearls

Can be mistaken for syphilis, so rule out this disease as well as herpes.

Treat partners who had sexual contact with the patient the 10 days before the patient’s onset of symptoms.
