A nematode, found in humans.

Epidemiologic Risks

Spread by mosquito bite, found in the tropics and subtropics. Africa, the Nile Delta, Turkey, India, the East Indies, Southeast Asia, Philippines, Oceanic Islands, and parts of South America including the Caribbean Haiti (PubMed).

Syndromes

Filariasis: many are asymptomatic, episodes of fevers and lymphadenitis lead to lymphatic obstruction and can progress of elephantiasis.

Treatment

Not much works, diethylcarbamazine 6 mg/kg qd po x 2 weeks (treatment of choice) or ivermectin 200 to 400 mg/kg plus albendazole at 400 mg every 6 months may decrease worm burden.

Doxycycline improves edema independently of effect on the parasite (PubMed).
