Sarcocystis

A parasite, over 100 spp in various animals. S. hominis, S. nesbitii, and S. suihominis are the cause of human infections.

Epidemiologic Risks

Eating the organism in undercooked meat (PubMed).

Syndromes

There is abdominal disease and muscle disease.

Fever (relapsing in half of patients), myalgia, headache, abdominal pain, cough, and eosinophilia. Muscle biopsy makes the diagnosis (PubMed) to find the organism and eosinophilic myositis.

Treatment

Supportive.

Maybe albendazole and steroids.

Symptoms can last years.
