Prevotella

Anaerobic gram negative rods including P. bivia, P. buccae, P. denticola, P. disiens, P. intermedia, P. melaninogenica, P. oralis, P. oris gingivalis and a bunch of others.

Epidemiologic Risks

Part of the human mouth and animal mouth and female GU tract. Diet dependent. Protein and animal fats of Western diet have mostly Bacteroides bacteria, while for those who eat carbohydrates have Prevotella (PubMed).

Syndromes

Where the spit goes, so goes the prevotella: can be part of human bite wounds, head and neck infections and lung abscess, and the occasional brain abscess.

Treatment

Metronidazole OR carbapenems OR clindamycin OR penicillin/beta-lactamase inhibitors.
