Phialophora

Microbiology

A fungus. P. verrucosa, P. americana, Phialophora europaea. A black yeast.

Epidemiologic Risks

Found in tropical soil, inoculated into the feet of them what can't afford shoes. Also found in rotting wood, soil, wasp nests, and plant debris.

Syndromes

Chromomycosis, disseminated phaeohyphomycosis and mycetoma (PubMed).

Treatment

Azoles, terbinafine and Amphotericin B.

Also local heat (>40C).
