A fungus. 19 species. Microsporum is just three species: M. audouinii, M. canis and M. ferrugineum. The remaining geophilic and zoophilic species have been transferred to the genera Lophophyton, Nannizzia and Paraphyton.

Epidemiologic Risks

Found in the soil, humans and pets.

Syndromes

Skin lesions: tinea capitis, tinea corporis, ringworm, and other dermatophytoses.

Treatment

Griseofulvin, terbinafine and itraconazole. Duration depends on what is infected.
