Diagnosis

Usually a cause of endocarditis, they can occur in any infection above the diaphragm (the muscle that moves air, not the birth control).

Epidemiologic Risks

Part of normal oral flora.

Microbiology

Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Aggregatibacter aphrophilus , Haemophilus paraphrophilus, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominus, Eikenella corrodens, Kingella kingii.

Pearls

Slow growers, it may take 2 or three weeks for the blood cultures to become positive.
