Microbiology

Anaerobic pleomorphic, gram-variable rod.

Epidemiologic Risks

Normal vaginal flora.

Syndromes

Bacterial vaginosis, probably less the pathogen and more the easily recognizable part of a change in vaginal flora.

Occasionally bacteremia in females after gyn surgery.

Treatment

BV: Oral metronidazole, intravaginal metronidazole gel, or intravaginal clindamycin cream.

Bacteremia: metronidazole, penicillin, vancomycin should all work.
