Infectious Disease Compendium

Cunninghamella

Microbiology

Mould, a zygomyces. 13 different species. Cunninghamella bertholletiae is the main human pathogen.

Epidemiologic Risks

Found in dirt, dung mostly in warm climes and, evidently, tropical nuts.

Syndromes

One of the invasive molds to cause rhinocerebral, pulmonary, cutaneoarticular, and disseminated 'mucor' infections in poor hosts: diabetics, leukemics etc (PubMed).

Treatment

Amphotericin B is the traditional treatment, although the majority of patients on it die. Posaconazole look promising and better than Amphotericin, at least in the least tube (PubMed)(PubMed). If possible, try and cut it out (PubMed)
