Capillaria philippinensis


A parasite. Capillaria hepatica and Capillaria philippinensis.

Epidemiologic Risks

Capillaria hepatica: eating dirt. Found in rats.

Capillaria philippinensis. Found in Philippines and Thailand, eating raw freshwater fish is the main risk, Gollum beware.


Capillaria hepatica: liver disease.

Diarrhea and gas with malabsorption.


Long courses of either albendazole or ivermectin has been curative of gi intestinal disease (PubMed). Mebendazole, 200 mg po bid x 20 days preferred over thiabendazole, 25 mg/kg for 30 days.
