Microbiology

Small, gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, CO2-requiring coccoid rods, includes A. schaalii, A. massiliense, and A. urinale. A. suis in pigs.

Hard to grow, suspect with a UTI that grows nothing but does not get better on treatment. (PubMed).

Syndromes

UTI in the elderly (PubMed) and the occasional sepsis (PubMed) and abscess (PubMed).

Treatment

Resistant to ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim, treat with ? beta-lactams, such as ampicillin or cephalosporins.
